School Choice/ Hardship

Georgia law states parents of students enrolled in Georgia public schools may request to transfer their child to another school within the school district if the district determines there is classroom space available. Due to the Butts County School System's strategic waiver, the process used prior to HB451 is still in effect.

Things to Remember:

Parents/ guardians that wish to transfer due to choice or hardship must email the principal of the receiving school to receive the necessary application.

Applications are not for the household. Each student requesting a transfer must have a separate application because classroom space can sometimes be grade specific.

Applicants will be notified by the principal of the receiving school.

All applicants must re-apply every year, prior to the subsequent school year beginning, in order to not lose enrollment status.

General Provisions For All School Choice Transfers

• A student must be a current Butts County School District resident in order to apply for a school choice transfer.  If a student is approved for a transfer and subsequently moves outside the Butts County School District, the school choice transfer will end at the time of the move.

• This transfer request is contingent upon any special programs the student may be enrolled in (English Language Learner Program or Special Education Program) which may require placement at a designated school where programs are housed.
• Applicants will be provided a confirmation email, normally within 2-3 business days that the application has been received. This is not a confirmation of approval.
• Parents/Guardians will be notified of final transfer approval or denial prior to open house.
• Selected students will need to re-apply every year.
• The student’s previous attendance, behavior, and academic performance must be in good standing for consideration for a transfer.
• Parents/Guardians are responsible for timely transportation to and from the transfer school.
• Once a school choice transfer has been approved, the parent/guardian must officially accept the transfer by the established date in order for the transfer to be valid.  Failure to accept the transfer by this deadline will result in the school choice transfer being nullified.

Provisions for Continuation of Enrollment transfers:

• For family moves, regardless of instructional delivery model, the student's new residence must be within Butts County.
• Transportation for students approved to continue enrollment must be provided by the parent/guardian. Patterns of tardiness will warrant a return to the student’s zoned school.
• The parent/guardian must promptly report to the principal or designee any future change in residency.
• Acceptable attendance, behavior, and grades are required in order for the student to be to remain on transfer if approved.
• Parents/guardians are expected to maintain a cordial and cooperative working relationship with district  and school personnel.
• Failure to comply with any provisions shall authorize the principal to immediately revoke a transfer.
• Once a student is determined to be eligible for a continuation of enrollment transfer, the final decision on approval will be made by the school's administration.
