E-SPLOST FAQ
-
What is ESPLOST?
ESPLOST stands for Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. This tax allows local school districts to ask voters to support a one penny sales tax for school improvements. The funds can be used for capital projects such as technology, facilities, and transportation. The funds can not be used for salaries.
-
Is this a tax increase?
No! Butts County sales tax will remain at the current level. This is not a new tax; just a continuation of a sales tax which has been in place since 1997 - 23 years.
-
How much money are we talking about?
Current collections average more than $400,000 a month and could total more than $24 million for the 5-year collection cycle. Since 2007, we have collected $56.7 million!
-
Who is paying this tax?
Anyone who purchases goods or services in Butts County! This includes local residents, tourists, or anyone who stops for gas at one of our exits on I-75.
-
Why a Bond Referendum?
- A bond referendum is a simple way for which school systems can borrow money.
- Bonds will allow the school district to provide for facility needs immediately.
- In the current economic climate, interest rates are very low; therefore it is much more cost effective to build now than to wait until reserves are saved.
