WHICH INSTRUMENTS ARE TAUGHT IN 5TH GRADE BAND
The elementary band offers flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone, baritone, and percussion. Additional advanced instruments such as French horn, tuba, bass clarinet, baritone saxophone, and tenor saxophone are available once your student reaches 6th-grade band. However, students are encouraged to stick with the instrument they learned in 5th grade or transition to one that uses the same skills that they learned in 5th grade. For example, the baritone and tuba are very similar making this an easy transition. Flute and french horn are nothing alike. They use completely different skills. Making this transition would be nearly impossible as your student would have to start back at the beginning whereas the goal is to build on what we learn each year instead of starting over.
WHICH INSTRUMENT SHOULD MY CHILD PLAY?
In previous years, we have been able to allow students to physically try the top two instruments that they are interested in order to make a decision on which instrument they will learn in 5th-grade band. However, given our current status regarding COVID-19 and out of an abundance of caution, we will not be conducting instrument testing this year.
Regardless, the most important factor in choosing the instrument that your child will play is their interest level in the instrument itself. Your child should choose an instrument that they like! As such we have provided materials for you to review regarding each instrument above.
Please watch the instrument videos, review the information with your child, and discuss the options.
Choosing an instrument is a big decision and choosing the right instrument will give your child the best chance of musical success.
